Brief History of Soul Food

One of the most authentic cuisines in the United States is soul food. This cuisine is the traditional cuisine of the Black Americans and to a lesser extent, the Black community worldwide. In actual fact, soul food as a term, was born during the 1960s and used to describe Black food, because "soul" was a common denominator for all things "black."

Soul food has its origins in Africa, because the original cuisine was actually African food brought over by the Black slaves at that time, which was the periods well before the 20th century. Once they adapted in America, the slaves started to adapt their cuisine to suit their new environment, utilizing ingredients previously unused, but common all around them in their new found home.

The early slaves also adopted or borrowed heavily from the cuisine of the original Native Indians that lived around them, incorporating corn heavily into their cuisine. As a result, soul food today has many corn derived dishes.

Till today, soul food is in constant evolution, as new ideas and influences from other cuisines make their way in. Thus we have the vibrant cuisine that we call soul food, today.
